The Agatston Award honors individuals whose pioneering efforts have saved lives from coronary artery disease — the leading cause of death worldwide. Dr. Gulati is recognized for her leadership of the 2021 chest pain guidelines and for her role in several key studies exploring cardiac risk factors and other health initiatives in women. This award also honors her role as a mentor who has paved the way for many of her colleagues to excel. “We are delighted to honor Dr. Martha Gulati as the 2023 Arthur S. Agatston Award recipient,” says SCCT President Brian Ghoshhajra, MD, MSCCT. “Dr. Gulati has made significant contributions to the field of cardiology, particularly in advancing our understanding of the unique cardiovascular risks and needs of women. Her research and leadership have had a profound impact on improving healthcare for women across the globe.” Dr. Gulati is an accomplished cardiologist, professor and researcher who has dedicated her career to improving cardiovascular care for women. She is director of Preventive Cardiology and associate director of the Preventive and Rehabilitative Cardiac Center in the Smidt Heart Institute at Cedars-Sinai, as well as associate director of the Barbra Streisand Women’s Heart Center in the Department of Cardiology at Cedars-Sinai. Her research has focused on the role of traditional and nontraditional risk factors in cardiovascular disease, including the effects of menopause, pregnancy and hormone therapy. She has also led efforts to increase awareness of the underdiagnosis and undertreatment of heart disease in women, and has been a vocal advocate for sex-specific research and guidelines. In addition to her research, Dr. Gulati is a highly respected clinician and educator who has trained and mentored numerous medical students, residents and fellows. She has received numerous awards for her teaching and clinical excellence, including the American Heart Association’s Women in Cardiology Mentoring Award. The Agatston Award is named after Dr. Arthur S. Agatston, a visionary and pioneer in the field of noninvasive cardiac imaging and one of the world’s leading preventive cardiologists. It will be presented to Dr. Gulati at the SCCT 18th Annual Scientific Meeting (SCCT2023) opening session on Friday, July 28 at the Heinz Convention Center in Boston, Mass.
